Who we are
Japan Family Guide is operated by Clark Media (“we”, “us”, “our”). This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use japanfamilyguide.com, how we use it, and the choices you have. If anything here is unclear, email us at hello@japanfamilyguide.com and we will explain it in plain English.
What we collect
We only collect what we need to run the site and send you the things you ask for.
Information you give us
- Your email address, if you email us directly. We are not currently collecting email addresses through the site; there is no sign-up form on japanfamilyguide.com at the moment. This section will apply again when one returns.
- Your name, if you choose to include it.
- Anything you write to us directly, for example when you reply to an email or send us a question.
Information collected automatically
When you visit the site, our hosting and analytics tools may record standard technical data: your approximate location (from your IP address), your device and browser type, the pages you view, and how you arrived (for example, the search or link that sent you here). This is the ordinary log and analytics data that almost every website collects.
Cookies
We and our partners use cookies and similar technologies to make the site work, to understand how it is used, and to track affiliate referrals (see below). You can control or block cookies through your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect how parts of the site work.
Affiliate cookies
Japan Family Guide earns commissions through affiliate links to partners such as Booking.com, Viator, GetYourGuide, and Amazon. When you click one of these links, the partner may set a cookie so they can credit us if you go on to book or buy. That cookie is set and controlled by the partner, under their own privacy policy, not ours. See our Affiliate Disclosure for the full picture.
How we use your information
We use your information to:
- reply to you if you have written to us;
- reply to your questions and messages;
- understand which content is useful, so we can make the site better;
- keep the site secure and working; and
- meet our legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, and we never will.
Email, and how to unsubscribe
There is no email sign-up on the site at present. If that changes, we will send only what you asked for plus the occasional honest recommendation (which may include affiliate links), and every email will carry an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Click it and you are out, no questions asked. You can also email hello@japanfamilyguide.com and ask us to remove you.
Who we share it with
We share data only with the service providers who help us run the site, and only so they can do their job. These include:
- our website host and infrastructure provider (Cloudflare);
- our email marketing platform, which stores your email address and sends our emails;
- our analytics provider, which helps us understand site usage; and
- the affiliate partners named above, when you click their links.
Each of these providers handles your data under their own privacy terms. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights and the safety of others.
Where your data is stored
We are based in Australia, but our service providers may store and process data on servers in other countries, including the United States and the European Union. Wherever it is processed, we expect it to be handled with appropriate protection.
Your rights and choices
At any time, you can:
- ask what personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct it if it is wrong;
- ask us to delete it; and
- unsubscribe from our emails.
Just email hello@japanfamilyguide.com. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). If you are in the United Kingdom, the European Union, or a US state with its own privacy law, you may have additional rights under that law, and we will honour reasonable requests to exercise them.
Children
This site is written for parents planning family travel. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us their information, email us and we will delete it.
How long we keep it
We keep your email address for as long as you are subscribed, and for a reasonable period afterwards in case you come back. We keep analytics and log data only for as long as it is useful. When data is no longer needed, we delete it.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information, and we choose reputable providers who do the same. No website can promise perfect security, but we treat your data as carefully as we would want ours treated.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your information, we will update this page and change the “last updated” date at the top. For significant changes, we may also let our email subscribers know.
